Raffaella Giordano
dancer and choreographer

Born in Turin in 1961, she starts studying dance in 1978 with C.Perrotti and with A.Sagna at the Hutter School of Turin. In 1980, she joins the Teatro e Danza Company La Fenice in Venice, directed by Carolyn Carlson taking part in Undici Onde, Underwood and Chalkwork.
For a short period, in 1981, she dances with Pina Bausch's Wuppertal Tanztheater in Kontakthof, Blaubart and Le sacre du printemp. In 1984 she joins the group L'Esquisse (J.Bouvier - R.Obadia) taking part in the creation of Vertéé for the Festival of Carpentras.
In 1984, again, she takes part in the creation of the Sosta Palmizi Dance Company with which, as dancer and choreographer, she creates the following ballets: Il cortile (1985), Tufo (1986), Perduti una notte (1989). In 1987, she achieves her first individual choreography for seven young dancers called Ssst.... . Coproduced with Sosta Palmizi - Bois de la Batie, Geneva.
In 1988 she composes the choreography for Rosamunde directed by L. Codignola at the theatre La Fenice in Venice. In 1989 she is invited to Germany, in Essen, where she creates Inuit for the Folkwang Tanz Studium (Artistic Director Pina Bausch). In 1990 she dances in the ballet Il muro directed by Pippo del Bono, a coproduction by Oriente-Occidente, Rovereto/ Asti Festival. In 1991 she creates the choreographic movements for the play La Medea di Porta Medina directed by Armando Pugliese.
In April 1991 at the Festival of the Teatro Due in Parma she presents a study entitled Vedere voci by and with Antonio Carallo, Tobia Ercolino, Bruno de' Franceschi, Raffaella Giordano. In 1991, again, she creates the choreographic movements for the play Il borghese gentiluomo directed by Armando Pugliese. In March 1992 she makes her debut in Reggio Emilia with her work I Forestieri, produced by the Sosta Palmizi Association together with the Dance Centre of Reggio Emilia, The Association i Teatri and the collaboration of the Teatro Comunale of Cagli (Pesaro).
She creates the choreography for L'azzurro necessario in which she is the solo dancer, and which makes its début at the Festival of Polverigi in July 1992, together with Giorgio Rossi's solo in Balocco. In January 1993, she is invited by the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine of Angers (Artistic Director L' Esquisse) to create a choreography with the second year of the school Du doute et de la certitude.
In July 1994 she makes her debut in Turin (Torino Danza in coproduction with the RomaEuropa Festival) with Danze rosa blu on an idea by Giorgio Rossi, choreography by Giorgio Rossi e Raffaella Giordano. In February '95 she is invited again to Essen (Germany) where she works on the new creation for the Folkwang Tanz Studium Il volto di Aria.
In the summer of 1995 together with Giorgio Rossi she gathers the Sosta Palmizi Dance Company; together they participate to the International Dance Marathon (XXXVIII Festival dei Due Mondi of Spoleto) with excerpts from Il cortile.
In August with the same company she takes part in the shooting of Bernardo Bertolucci Io ballo da sola in which material from Il cortile and Sul coraggio e Pasatua che va alla fontana is used. In September 1995 she creates Fiordalisi in which she is the solo dancer and which makes its debut in Spello on the occasion of the Festival Segni Barocchi, a Sosta Palmizi Association production in collaboration with the Town of Longiano (Forlì) and that of Cortona (Arezzo).
From January to March 1996 she is invited by the C.N.D.C. of Angers - L'Esquisse (Artistic directors J. Bouver/R. Obadia) to create her latest work ... et anima mea... presented at the Theatre Beaurepaire of Angers on the 26th of March.
